Best Urban Bike Ride

The Jamaica Bay Bike Unit is a 19mile parallelogram that knits together stretches of the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge and Rockaway Beach. Cobbled together from Jamaica Bay Greenway routes, protected bicycle paths, and on-street bike lanes, the route circumnavigates the bay, offering cardio bird-watching (See “Best Place to Bird-Watch,” elsewhere in this section), and the opportunity to take in some awe-inspiring Atlantic Ocean and estuary views. You can reach the loop via the L, A, or 3 subway line, any of which will situate you nicely to get started on the Rockaway Gateway Greenway (bit.ly/jamaica-bay-bike-map). Tootle southwest past Canarsie Pier, then hang a left at Floyd Bennett Field and walk your wheels across the Gil Hodges Bridge to Fort Tilden and Jacob Riis Park. Rockaway Beach Boulevard takes you eastward to the Cross Bay Bridge, where you head north through the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, over the North Channel and into Queens proper. (Don’t own a bike? You can rent one at Jamaica Bay.)
