Best Of

Best Vocalist (Female)

If we had a category for “Best Work Ethic,” Jen Goma would win that too. Somehow the Brooklyn-based singer manages to split her time among three prolific bands: A Sunny Day in Glasgow, the Pains of Being Pure at Heart, and People Get Ready, each of which released an album this year. Goma’s soaring vocals feature prominently on all three records, but if we had to pick a favorite, it would have to be Sunny Day’s glorious Sea When Absent, on which Goma and bandmate Annie Frederickson take turns singing over clattering percussion and crashing guitars, then meet in joyous harmony. Recording, touring, and documentary filmmaking: Jen Goma has energy in spades.
