Tasting the Vegan Burger at Blossom du Jour

The Veggielante is on a mission to spread the word about places to order good meatless grub. Check out this week’s pick.

Destination: Blossom du Jour (449 Amsterdam Avenue, 212-712-9822)

Neighborhood: Upper West Side

Cuisine: Vegan Fast Food

Overview: Restaurateur Pamela Elizabeth opened her first vegan restaurant, Blossom, in 2005. Building on its success, she turned in 2010 to vegan fast food with her first location of Blossom du Jour, where she turns out healthy, meat-less fare quickly. Since then, she has opened four Blossom du Jour locations that feature 100 percent vegan menus. Elizabeth’s goal is to not only serve fast, nutritious food, but to serve food that is conscious, and that doesn’t hurt our animals or our environment.

Highlights: Blossom du Jour’s skyscraper burger ($8.50) is, as its name suggests, indeed piled high: a vegan burger is stacked with vegan bacon, vegan cheese, onion rings, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and special sauce. While the burger itself is fairly bland, Blossom du Jour’s special sauce gives the dish a spicy zing, and the onion rings — which, yes, are actual fried onion rings — provide a hearty crunch. If you’re a recent convert to an animal-free diet, the accoutrements here should sate any cravings for burgers you might be experiencing.
