The gorgeous, lilting harmonies of Johanna and Klara Soderberg—the sisters better known as First Aid Kit—will grace Hammerstein Ballroom’s stage tonight. The Swedish-born Soderberg’s first real entryway into the world of music was a cover of the Fleet Foxes song “Tiger Mountain Peasant Song” that they posted to Youtube as teenagers. The video went viral when Robin Pecknold (of Fleet Foxes) praised it, and soon the girls were writing and recording their own original takes in the Americana/country tradition. Their sophomore release Stay Gold came out in spring of this year, and it cements their voices with more intricate, nuanced takes on country music staples like steel guitar, finger-picked riffs and off-kilter rhythms. The sisters make music that is stately, sad and polished and it somehow feels like an homage to Americana while maintaining a singular sense of identity. But most of all, expect to be bowled over by the sheer force of harmony that their entwined voices produces—that’s the golden part.
