Taste Vegetarian East and West African Specialties at Patisserie Des Ambassades

Overview: Ken Alice N’doye and Gorgui N’doye opened Patisserie Des Ambassades 10 years ago, serving their West Harlem neighborhood a smorgasbord of global foods. The versatile restaurant spans many cuisines: French, African, Vietnamese, Caribbean, Italian, and American foods. While a portion of the menu is entirely Senegalese — the owners hail from Dakar — the restaurant also has a bakery, as well as extensive breakfast and brunch menus.

Highlights: Patisserie Des Ambassades’ Comoros curry ($15), a traditional dish from the tiny East African island nation of Comoros, is loaded with a number of vegetables, including broccoli, corn, carrot, potato, green beans, peas, and onion, which sit in a yellow coconut milk curry, tinged with sweetness and soft spice. It’s heartier than soup, and it comes accompanied with a mountain of rice.

The restaurant’s other vegetarian entrées are also stews; the vegetarian casamance ($15), a Senegalese dish, is tomato-based, and the international mafe ($15), a West African specialty, is built on a rich peanut butter-infused base. Patisserie Des Ambassades also has a quiche Florentine ($12).
