Six Restaurants That Opened This Week In NYC – 11/21/2014


When one restaurant’s doors close, another’s open in fast-paced New York City, and every Friday, we’ll fill you in on what opened up around town. This week: a Brooklyn spot from an Ai Fiori alum, a cupcake shop in the East Village, and a soba-heavy restaurant in Alphabet City.

Almanac, 28 Seventh Avenue South

After closing Mas (La Grillade), a restaurant where all menu items were cooked over a wood fire, Galen Zamarra brings us Almanac, which focuses on seasonal ingredients. Earlier this week, Zamarra told us, “At Almanac, we’re not just going nose-to-tail for pig, but we’re looking at nose-to-tail anything. Pumpkin, carrot. We want to be responsible and use all of the food.” Almanac is now open for dinner nightly.

Cooklyn, 659 Vanderbilt Ave, Brooklyn, 347-915-0721

Located in Prospect Heights, Cooklyn is a new restaurant from Ai Fiori alum Anthony Theocaropoulos. When we spoke to Theocaropoulos earlier this week, he told us, “I have a pedestal to do my type of food. I have full carte blanche for what I want to do. I couldn’t ask for a better team.” The menu is European with an Asian twist, so diners can expect dishes utilizing items such as octopus, pork belly, sea urchin, and lamb.

Dojo Izakaya, 38 Avenue B

Sushi Dojo’s David Bouhadana has opened his offshoot, Dojo Izakaya. The restaurant is serving a variety of homemade soba noodle dishes topped with vegetables, fish, fried tofu, and more. Diners can also feast on a pork sandwich on homemade white bread, Japanese fried chicken, and a soba risotto. For dessert, look for soba tea brûlée, a buckwheat tea-infused crème brûlée, or Mineoka tofu, a Japanese-style rice pudding.

Lyfe Kitchen, 248 West 55th Street, 212-265-5933

Lyfe Kitchen has opened its first location in New York City. The self-proclaimed fresh-casual spot focuses on vegetables and whole grains, and nothing on the menu reaches over 600 calories. Entrees include flatbreads, egg sandwiches, quinoa pancakes, and noodle bowls.

Sweet Generation, 130 First Avenue

Taking over the former First Avenue Pierogi & Deli is Sweet Generation, a cupcake shop funded by an Indiegogo campaign. Owner Amy Chasan is whipping up an assortment of baked goods, from cupcakes to brownies to cupcake sandwiches. The shop will also be offering cupcake decorating workshops.

Via Carota, 51 Grove Street

After months of anticipation, Buvette’s Jody Williams and I Sodi’s Rita Sodi bring us Via Carota. The Italian restaurant offers a menu of pastas, fish, vegetables, and crostini.
