MID-CENTURY MODERN

by

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, the country’s largest and most successful modern dance troupe, returns for its annual five-week City Center run, bringing a new work by Matthew Rushing to recordings by the activist songwriter Odetta Holmes, known as “the voice of the civil rights movement”; and company premieres by Christopher Wheeldon, Jacqulyn Buglisi, and Hofesh Schechter (whose Uprising, featuring seven of the troupe’s extraordinary male dancers, debuts at tonight’s gala benefit). And, of course, Alvin Ailey’s enduring Revelations, at 28 of the 39 performances, some with live music. Seekers of novelty should choose the “all new” bills, on December 18, 20, 26, 28, and 31.
