Voice Choices

After 9-11, there was a stretch when New Yorkers’ inherent irony receded and we were good to each other for a while. Keely Garfield, a former resident of the WTC neighborhood whose life was upended by the events of that day, is bringing us WOW, a dance that takes its name from a Kate Bush song and poses questions like “What does a truly sincere act look like?” She and five dancers, to live music inspired by Bush and performed by Matthew Brookshire, set out to perform from the bottom of their hearts, dancing as though their lives depended on it. Her choreography, always grounded in the mysterious, if not the mystical, goes its own way, and we are happy to follow.
