The objective of a Winter Solstice ritual is to entice the sun to come back after a too-short stint in the sky. What would make the sun want to come back more than the sounds of Puerto Rico? This year, Danny Rivera and a crew of bomba drummers join the (aptly named) Paul Winter Consort for the 35th Annual Winter Solstice Celebration, which takes place in Morningside Heights’ visually and acoustically stunning St. John’s Cathedral. Paul Winter, who was invited by Jackie O to present the first-ever jazz concert at the White House, revolutionized classical music by incorporating sounds from various ethnic cultures as well as from the natural world, specifically whale songs. The Forces of Nature Dance Theater and gospel singer Theresa Thomason further enhance the pageantry, which has earned its place among emblematic New York holiday shows like The Nutcracker and the Radio City Christmas Spectacular.
