Many people resolve to become healthy in the new year, but what about a mental revamp? Emerging from 2014, a year fraught with unrest over the murders of Michael Brown, Eric Garner, and many other unarmed people of color, this might be the perfect time to re-examine the human psyche’s penchant for aggression and subsequent need to protest. Today Freud Out Loud presents a marathon reading of one of the psychoanalyst’s most politically charged works: Civilization and Its Discontents (1930). The roster of readers includes activists, psychologists, literature professors, religious leaders, and writers, such as Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Hours Michael Cunningham. Each will highlight an aspect of the seminal work, which, let’s face it, probably resonates best in a social setting.
