Today, soothe your hangover-addled brain by dropping in on the Poetry Project’s Annual 24-hour New Year’s Day Marathon Benefit Reading, held at St. Mark’s Church. In a city of vanishing cultural institutions, this annual reading has been going strong since 1974, and has featured such New York luminaries as Jim Carroll, Patti Smith, and Allen Ginsberg. The curated reading welcomes poets who are active in the downtown arts scene, but stylistically they run the gamut: This year’s performers include country music legend Steve Earle; the prolific Eileen Myles, who has been called “the rock star of modern poetry”; and JD Samson, musician and songwriter for Le Tigre and JD Samson & MEN. Proceeds benefit the Poetry Project, which puts on dozens of other events throughout the year. Food, drinks, and books will also be on sale today.
