On Sunday, January 4, 2014, the funeral for NYPD Officer Wenjian Liu — who with NYPD officer Rafael Ramos was fatally shot by Ismaaiyl Brinsley on December 20 in Brooklyn — was held at the Aievoli Funeral Home in southern Brooklyn. A number of police officers turned their backs to a video screen that showed Mayor Bill de Blasio’s eulogy, as they did during the funeral for Ramos on December 27, in a protest of the mayor, who some NYPD members and supporters say encouraged protests of the NYPD after a Staten Island grand jury decided not to indict the officer who killed Eric Garner this summer. The protests led Brinsley to kill the officers for no other reason that for being cops, say supporters of the NYPD, some of which held signs on Sunday that read, “God Bless the NYPD/Dump De Blasio.”
