The first female African American comic artist was Jackie Ormes, who created Torchy Brown in the 1950s; it took almost 30 years for another to join her in the field. Creators of both sexes who followed in her footsteps will appear at the Black Comic Book Festival, including John Jennings, Jerry Craft, and Alex Simmons. Attendees can enjoy panel discussions and watch films like the Black Panther animated feature and Brandon Easton’s documentary Brave New Souls, about this century’s generation of black science fiction and fantasy writers. Children can create their own comics in hands-on workshops led by pros like Simmons.
