This week’s openings were anchored by Santina, the new project from the team behind Torrisi, Parm, and Dirty French that opened under the High Line. Santina offers lighter fare than the owners’ other venues; healthy food seems to be a theme this week — Café Clover made its debut in the West Village with a cheffed-up menu that’s been approved by a nutritionist. La Loteria (29 Seventh Avenue South, 212-858-9096)
This modern Mexican restaurant in the West Village comes from Julieta Ballesteros, who’s been featured on Iron Chef America and also owns Crema. Named for a popular Mexican Bingo-like game, the eatery is serving upscale twists on traditional Mexican dishes. “It’s French presentation, modern presentation, but preserves the essential tradition,” Ballesteros told us in an interview earlier this week. Look for tacos, tostaditos, empanadas, and enchiladas, plus a cocktail menu that includes a number of variations on the margarita.
Café Clover (10 Downing Street, 212-675-4350)
“The idea here was to start with delicious food that everyone would want to eat, then make it healthier without compromising the experience,” chef David Standridge said of the new Café Clover. The Market Table alum creates the dishes, and then a nutritionist sends him a full breakdown of the meal so that he can make further adjustments. Look for greenmarket salads, appetizer servings of shaved hamachi and roast oyster, and entrees like a cauliflower steak, quinoa tagliatelle, and a pasture-raised strip loin. Cocktails from Johnny Swet match the theme; drinks incorporate seasonal, health-oriented ingredients like matcha and beets.
Lincoln Square Steak (208 West 70th Street)
This classic steakhouse from Club A Steakhouse owner Bruno Selimaj made its debut on Thursday, introducing a menu that includes a number of steaks, of course, plus seafood entrees like branzino and swordfish and Italian dishes like lasagna and rigatoni Bolognese. Stop by between 5 and 6:30 nightly (maybe before a show at Lincoln Center?), and you’ll be able to partake in a $39 three-course prix fixe.
Santina (820 Washington Street)
Major Food Group proprietors Mario Carbone, Rich Torrisi, and Jeff Zalaznick unveiled this fish and vegetable restaurant under the High Line this week, drawing inspiration from the farmers’ markets that used to fill the neighborhood where the restaurant is located. Start with a crudité platter, and then move into radish and cured salmon, branzino crudo, a kale sunchoke salad, and blue-crab spaghetti. The wine list features mostly Mediterranean selections, though there are a few domestic bottles, too.
