Bakeries have long been a source of great meals on a dime. And Matthew Tilden, owner of SCRATCHbread (1069 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn; 718-744-8231), is keeping that tradition going with his Bed-Stuy bakeshop.
From build-your-own sandwiches, salads, grits, and rice to Grandma-style pizza to heavenly pastries, most of the menu will have you in and out for less than $10 (even with a sweet treat, if you so desire).
There’s no going wrong with anything that has been blessed by Tilden’s expert hands — his pecan sticky bun ($3) is pure syrup-coated bliss. And you can get really creative with his impeccably prepared ingredients. For example, a DIY breakfast with grits, soft egg, wood-fired greens, smoked chile sauce, and slow-roasted pork is just over $6.
We highly suggest choosing one of the maestro’s compositions. It’s all good, but if you’re looking for something nutritious and tasty, go for the veg flat ($7). Crisp seasonal roasted veggies, greens, baba ghanoush, and smoked almond romesco are piled high on Tilden’s lofty sourdough naan. Soft egg or avocado can be added for an extra $1 apiece.
It’s the perfect dairy-free, vegetarian dish.
