The myth of the dumb dancer gets laid to rest at the Dance/NYC Symposium, an
annual gabfest paced by more than 80 of the best minds among the ranks of performers, choreographers, educators, foundation executives, and government agencies, including New York City’s new cultural commissioner, Tom Finkelpearl. Several simultaneous sessions survey
cultural equity (including advancing dance venues in the city’s outer boroughs), initiatives toward greater diversity, emergency preparedness, technology, the Bessies, and how to find and satisfy a corporate sugar daddy (or mama) to help realize your artistic dreams. Also on offer: one-on-one meetings with legal, marketing, and financial experts. The final session, “Making Change: Artist Voices,” features managers and artists from culturally diverse troupes addressing strategies for inclusion.
