Jennifer Backhaus, a native of Southern California, trained in ballet, gymnastics, and Limón technique, learning to take space with momentum. “I like to go upside down,” she says. When she started choreographing, it was no surprise that her dancers took weight on their hands. A pioneer of contemporary styles in Orange County, running Backhausdance — the only surviving professional troupe in a surprisingly vibrant, vast suburban landscape — she’s a homegrown artist with big aspirations, making a splash on the
international scene. Her nine passionate, athletic performers offer Incandescent,
in which they discover one another devouring space in a field of light bulbs, and Elasticity of the Almost, exploring fragmentation, chaos, and structure in a sea of multicolored balls. “The balls go all over,” she says. “That’s the fun part.”
