As Trevor Noah recently discovered, it’s not easy to joke about identity politics. But comedian Phoebe Robinson, who’s appeared on Last Comic Standing, Broad City, and Late Night With Seth Meyers, walks that tightrope like a Flying Wallenda. Blaria Live grew out of Robinson’s blog, Blaria (or, “Black Daria”), which features such headlines as “Tiger Mom Breakdown: Amy Chua Is a Goofy Ass Heaux,” and “DOs and DON’Ts of Black People Shopping in Your Store.” The blog spawned a podcast and then a popular live stand-up show, hosted by Robinson and Daily Show correspondent Jessica Williams. (If you haven’t seen their hilarious parody of Lifetime’s Girlfriend Intervention — which sports the tagline “Inside every white woman is a strong black woman waiting to bust out” — get thee to YouTube.) Past shows have featured comedians Josh Gondelman, Wyatt Cenac, Todd Barry, Brooke Van Poppelen, and others.
