DANCING IN THE STREETS

by

“Live Free & Dance” is the theme of the Ninth Annual Dance Parade. Over 150 dance groups of every conceivable age, style, and level of professionalism boogie down Broadway to University Place, and then across St. Marks Place to Tompkins Square Park, where a post-parade festival unfolds on four stages, followed by an after-party at Drom. Grand marshals include ballet diva Carmen de Lavallade, Robert Battle of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, bhangra pioneer DJ Rekha, and wheelchair dancer Mary Verdi-Fletcher; this year’s parade recognizes the 25th anniversary of the Americans With Disabilities Act. Cheer from the sidelines, or buy a ticket to the grandstand at 8th Street and University (bring your hat and sunscreen), bask in comfort, and listen as each passing troupe is announced by DJ BooshWheelz.
