With fields, trees, historic structures, wildlife, and the brand-new Hammock Grove — just what it sounds like, a garden full of hammocks for some next-level relaxing — it’s time to get excited about the reopening of Governors Island this weekend. The seasonal oasis will beckon us back once again with its summer lineup of arts and events, starting today with the annual Family Fun Festival, featuring kid-friendly arts and crafts, music, theater performances, and games. Adults can check out Open Texts, today’s special reading by the island’s writers-in-residence, or Open Studios, a display by the twenty multi-disciplinary artists-in-residence who have been working on site since March. Learn about history and harbor-preservation efforts from the Governors Island Alliance, or just stroll the open walkways before summer’s crowds.
