THE GOLDEN AGE OF RIO-WOOD

by

O Brazil,” a screening series focused on representing the thriving state of contemporary Brazilian cinema, rolled out its debut program at Astoria’s Museum of the Moving Image last fall. This year, the key players in the formation of “O Brazil” — MoMI, Cinema Tropical, and guest curator Marcela Goglio — have reunited for a second go-around. The 2015 slate commenced earlier this month with Cláudio Marques and Marília Hughes’s After the Rain, a semi-autobiographical tale set during the crucial political year of 1984, as the country fights for a transition away from dictatorial rule. Tonight’s follow-up screening, André Novais Oliveira’s She Comes Back on Thursday, provides an intimate look at a family of color (a rarity in Brazilian movies). The hook: The characters are played by the director’s own brother and parents.
