Mondays are by far the worst day of the week. Tuesdays are slightly better, but there’s still more than half the week to go until Friday. Fortunately, Taco Tuesdays are there to lift your spirits. Fonda in the East Village (40 Avenue B; 212-677-4096) offers one with a killer deal — every Tuesday, select tacos are $5.
Fonda’s hand-pressed tortillas are made with heirloom corn direct from Mexican farms: straight-up landrace corn adapted by age-old selective breeding and cultivated on openly pollinated fields.
Fonda’s taco choices, served three to an order, include al pastor (pineapple-marinated pork, onions, cilantro, and avocado tomatillo sauce), carne asada (grilled skirt steak, onion, cilantro, and chile de arbol sauce), and pulled-chicken tacos, crisp and aromatic with guajillo chile.
The tacos alone are a quick, delicious fix, but Fonda’s East Village also offers happy hour from 5 to 8 p.m. A concise list of bar snacks is served, including quesadillas and excellent guacamole ($6), with cheap drinks to go along. Splurge on a frozen rosalita with hibiscus ($6) or a mango margarita ($7).
That should help the week go by.
