What It’s Like Being a Colombian Soccer Fanatic in New York

There’s little else that Colombians love more than their soccer.

In New York, the El Basurero Restaurant (32-17 Steinway Street, Astoria, Queens) is one of the most popular gathering places for Colombian expats who unite around their culture and their team.

“We are born loving our team,” says Carlos Quintero, a Colombian who proudly wears his yellow jersey every time his team plays. On June 26, the men’s national team played Argentina in the Copa América quarterfinals in Chile.

Copa America is the oldest international tournament, and although Colombia lost in dramatic fashion — on penalty kicks — the fans walked out sad, but proud of their team.

The loss followed the women’s national team loss on June 22 to the United States in the Round of 16 at the Women’s World Cup in Canada.
