Update, 4:30 p.m. Friday:
An NYPD spokesman says the woman filed a police report about her snatched phone, saying it was a Samsung Galaxy. The department also says the Citi Bike pursuer hasn’t come forward. The NYPD declined to say if the woman was a tourist visiting the city or a resident.
Here’s another reason to stop texting and walking: Terrible people who happen to ride bicycles will snatch your phone as they speed by.
This dash-cam video was shot around 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 8, on Avenue A heading south toward East 7th Street (you can see the Joe Strummer mural on the righthand side of the screen).
Things seem to be going OK until the taxi stops and a woman in the crosswalk, cellphone in hand, stops to let a cyclist go by. The man on the bike (expertly?) reaches out with his left and grabs the phone from the woman.
She quickly pulls down her hood and runs after him.
A few seconds later, another cyclist on a Citi Bike follows up, comes out of the saddle, and starts pedaling after them.
We’ve reached out to the YouTube uploader who posted the video — and will update the story when we hear back.
