When One Direction took the stage, they did so fashionably late, almost as if they were waiting for the sun to set to perform in an iPhone-lit night sky. Instead of opting for a countdown before their entrance, 1D airs a clip of each boy exploring some country, reading a map upside-down in Egypt, swimming in the Mediterranean, what have you — it’s a ritual they’ve been kicking their gigs off with for years. It gives the audience a feel for their expansiveness, validating their “biggest band in the world” title for even the most disinterested dad.
