Best New DIY Music Venue

Slightly more legit than your average DIY space, Alphaville evokes the venue-as-speakeasy vibe of Cameo Gallery. There’s a cozy, wood-paneled bar and restaurant up front (which serves some of the best chicken nuggets in Bushwick), while the joint’s raw, unadorned show space hides quietly in the back. Eschewing the absurdist street-art-style murals that usually decorate similarly divey settings, its white walls literally offer performers a blank canvas to either totally ignore or fully utilize. During Jenny Hval’s appearance last March, she turned the space into a diaphanous maze with weird projections; mostly, though, scrappy punk bands just show up and blaze through raucous sets. With U.S. Girls, Destruction Unit, and Ex-Cult all on the books for this fall, Alphaville cements itself as a bastion of the DIY scene’s eastward exodus. 140 Wilson Avenue, Brooklyn 11237, 347-413-8801,
