Here’s a List of Prince Tributes Happening in NYC This Week and Beyond

This is the worst kind of déjà vu: A little over three months ago, we were compiling a list of David Bowie tributes following the legend’s death. Here we are again, doing it for a very different but no less monumental icon. He leaves behind a legacy of musical and cultural innovation, one that was still going strong when he died unexpectedly this morning. It’s hard to know where to turn at times like these, and as we reel from this news, let’s do it together, shall we? This list will be updated continuously as we learn of more tributes and celebrations.

Wednesday 4/27
Classic Album Sundays Prince Tribute
Good Room, 7 p.m., free with RSVP

In a special Wednesday edition of his ongoing weekend listening party, DJ Ron Like Hell plays The Revolution’s Around the World In A Day through Good Room’s amazing soundsystem, pausing at key moments to discuss the album’s genius and probably just fan out about Prince generally. After the presentation from 9 p.m. until the grooves run out, DJ Spinna presents a special edition of his Prince-vs-MJ dance party Soul Slam.

Friday 4/29
Lola Starr’s Dreamland Roller Disco
LeFrak Center at Lakeside (Prospect Park)
7:30 p.m., $18-$350

This weekly roller disco party was supposed to start in May, but when one of the most fabulously stylish, danceable musicians in the world left us, Miss Starr answered the call and got it together to do a pre-season edition in tribute.  Dressing up is all but mandatory, particularly because there are dance-offs and prizes to be won all night. Note that skate rental is included but not guaranteed due to supply, so getting there on the early side is encouraged.

Saturday 5/7
Dance Music Sex Romance
Rough Trade NYC
9 p.m., $5

The good folks over at Music Video Time Machine love to throw parties celebrating the best visuals in (usually pop) music, and when it comes to Prince, there’s no shortage. This dance party celebration screens highlights and deep cuts from the master’s catalogue, with trivia, giveaways, and more rounding out the night. No word yet on the Sign O’ the Times concert video, but fingers crossed…
