Chicago’s got a bit of a chip on its shoulder about being the second city (or arguably third). So to compensate, the city makes everything beefier and cheesier than those uptight New Yorkers can handle. Chicago expats living in New York screamed with joy in our nasal “a” accents when Hank’s Juicy Beef, a Chicago-style beef sandwich emporium, opened up in Tribeca. A beef sandwich from Chicago institutions like Al’s or Portillo’s is less of a french dip and more of a disaster on a stale bit of french roll dipped in gravy. It’s the perfect meal when you’re specifically craving something that’s like a burger, but a whole lot messier.
