What is a solid state battery?
In simple terms, a solid state battery is a battery that uses a solid material as an electrolyte, as opposed to the lithium-ion batteries most modern technology currently employs, which use a liquid electrolyte. The liquid electrolyte is what is responsible for starting electrical fires that involve batteries.

What makes solid state batteries better?
Engineers and researchers from across the world have been trying to develop a viable solid state battery for years. According to experts, solid state batteries are superior to regular lithium ion batteries for several main reasons.
Solid state batteries are safer and more stable. As mentioned above, solid state batteries eliminate the risk of dangerous electrical fires, which lithium ion batteries are prone to starting if damaged or poorly manufactured. This risk is especially concerning when it comes to lithium ion battery use in electric vehicles. Furthermore, liquid electrolytes can contain harmful chemicals, which solid state batteries avoid.
Solid state batteries last longer. A research team from Harvard University speculates that, with further optimization, solid state batteries will be able to last at least 25 years. Lithium batteries last approximately two to three years, depending on charging frequency and usage habits. The longer lifespan will increase the sustainability of many of our technologies, including portable devices and electric vehicles, which currently have huge environmental impact due to the consequences of disposing of batteries. They may also charge faster and retain battery life for longer.
Solid state batteries can work in harsher conditions. With some prototypes able to function at a temperature range of -20°C to 80°C (-4°F to 176°F), solid state batteries will allow our technologies to be used in harsher environments, including in space. One solid state battery producer has already agreed with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency to test out their batteries on the International Space Station.

Manganese is already a component in the two most commonly manufactured batteries worldwide — the lithium-ion battery and the nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery.
In September 2021, engineers at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) announced the most efficient and best-performing solid state lithium battery developed to date. This battery made use of manganese oxide in its cathode. While Solid Power has not publicly released the chemical makeup of their solid-state battery, industry experts predict that commercially available solid state lithium batteries will contain manganese.
