Police and protesters clashed at the intersection at West North Avenue and North Fulton Avenue in Baltimore well into the early morning of April 28, 2015, as buildings, businesses, and cars throughout the city burned. The violence stems from the events of April 12, when a Baltimore man named Freddie Gray was loaded into a police van, seemingly healthy, according to a video. He later died from injuries to his neck. “Roaming gangs of mostly young men clashed with police in the streets, seriously injuring officers; tore open businesses; and looted their stocks,” reported the Baltimore Sun on April 28. “Gov. Larry Hogan declared a state of emergency and called in the National Guard, and state police requested as many as 5,000 reinforcements from neighboring states.” Photos by C.S.
