Michael White and Chris Cannon of Alto are the latest restaurateurs to be taken to court on allegations of labor law violations.
According to a press release, the two are being sued by three current employees, who say that “despite their great success, which Cannon and White achieved on the backs of their waitstaff, they required their waitstaff to share their hard-earned tips with tip ineligible workers, including the General Manager of Alto, that they unlawfully took a tip credit and paid less than the full minimum wage, that they denied their waitstaff spread-of-hours pay, and that they required them to purchase and launder required uniforms.”
So, are we seeing a mini workers’ rights movement in New York, or is suing one’s boss just the latest trend among wait and bus staff? What do you think about it?
