Animal Love

(Ulrich Seidl, 1995).
You could call Seidl’s uncategorizable film—not pure doc, not pure narrative, but a sort of “staged reality”—a radical depiction of loneliness and the desperate yearning for love. It concerns a bunch of folks in Vienna whose only companions and bedfellows are their pets. It may sound cute; it’s actually one of the most disquieting films of the 90s.
