At Long Last, the Drake Jay-Z Reunion: “Light Up”

Less of a banger than we would’ve predicted, but still real fierce in spots, and miles better than “Off That,” the song Drake guested on for Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3. On “Light Up,” Drake starts out sounding a bit like Jay–polysyllabic, clever, quick–and Jay returns the homage. Like he did way back when he blessed Rick Ross on the “Hustlin'” remix, there’s at least a gesture in the direction of his protégé’s flow: world-weary, self-doubting, defiant anyway. Of course, with the exception of that middle adjective, all of those things come pretty natural to Jay-Z. “Drake, here’s how they gonna come at you: with silly rap feuds, trying to distract you.” Jay would know.
