Jonathan Mattocks lost his appeal and will probably go to prison for two years for bending his MetroCard. Apparently creasing the “primary magnetic field” on the card can fool a subway turnstile into giving you a free ride — the MTA claims eight million such frauds a year, but that sounds like an accounting stunt. Mattocks was expecting at most a three-month bid, but the court charged him with a felony, and the Court of Appeals has upheld that draconian sentence. So you can now presume the $2 fraud, or any official misapprehension of such, can lead to a couple years in the joint. Better start keeping your MetroCard in a metal case, citizens.
