Bluebeard

by

Edgar G. Ulmer (1944).
The Maestro of Poverty Row is near top form with this atmospheric evocation of mid 19th-century Paris. Shakespearean actor John Carradine is superbly modulated as a mad marionette artist—and serial murderer of women. With its interpolated puppet opera and rooftop chase, Bluebeard ranks just below Detour among Ulmer’s PRC productions.
