Countdown to New Holland Herring at Russ and Daughters

Last year's catch

The time for New Catch Holland herring–equal to the finest sushi–is almost upon us.

The small, silvery fishes from the cold waters of the North Sea are at their peak once a year, starting in early June and lasting for approximately four weeks. In Holland, the arrival of the first barrel of herring is a national holiday, and the queen gets the ritual first taste.

Russ and Daughters always pulls out all the stops for the herring’s arrival. Today, a shop employee said that they expect to have this year’s catch around June 8th. The appetizing mecca will soon announce a one-night event to celebrate the fish.
