EAST MEETS WEST

“Here and Elsewhere,” the New Museum’s latest building-wide exhibition, gets its title from the 1976 Jean-Luc Godard, Jean-Pierre Gorin, and Anne-Marie Miéville pro-Palestinian documentary Ici et ailleurs. Much like the namesake film, it focuses on modern representations of the Arab world, but ends up being much broader—Ed Said’s “imagined geography” at play, a comprehensive look at the foreign that helps us to understand the familiar. The exhibit opens today, gathering 40 artists from 12 countries in the Arab world spanning North Africa to the Middle East. Such an overview of contemporary Arab artists working in mediums across the board has never been seen before in New York.
