“Exploding the teenage underground into passionate revolt against the corporate ogre since 1982,” is the motto of K Records, the Olympia-based label founded by Calvin Johnson (Dub Narcotic Sound System, Beat Happening). And it’s one that countless musicians have gotten behind (Kurt Cobain tattooed the K Records logo on his forearm). Responsible for numerous outstanding recordings, such as Beck’s One Foot in the Grave and Modest Mouse’s first EP, Blue Cadet-3, Do You Connect?, the label was also a champion of the riot grrrl movement—Bikini Kill, Miranda July, and Lois all recorded for K. Tonight, view a screening of Heather Rose Dominic’s 2000 documentary, The Shield Around the K, with a Q&A with the director after the film. The movie is part of the four-day NYC Popfest.
