The greatest of all pulp fantasies returns with even more rediscovered footage in the most complete version since its 1927 premiere. Fritz Lang’s profligate hallucination of a future city, whose rich cavort in skyscraper gardens while the workers toil beneath the subway, is a movie whose every detail is subsumed to the overall effect. The plot is often absurd, but the image overpowers the text. No movie has ever more vividly visualized the industrialization of social relations—its graphic intelligence is exceeded only by its conceptual audacity.
