Living On the Waterfront

Multitasking New York Water Taxis are freeing urbanites from two common causes of headaches: riding in malodorous subways and planning fresh activities for jaded out-of-towners. Waterfront neighborhoods in the midst of reinvention, including DUMBO, South Williamsburg, Battery Park City, and Long Island City, have the added attraction of water taxi service, allowing commuters to get downtown in minutes. It’s more expensive than the MTA, with one-way tickets costing $4 to $6 and monthly passes priced at $123 to $175, but think of the savings on painkillers and stress-relief massages. The two-day, $20, hop-on-and-off pass is a good bet for friends on their 10th visit to the city, since the boat stops at worthwhile but hard-to-reach places they may have missed on foot.
