VOICE CHOICES ARCHIVES

R.I.P. OIL

by

Part of WNYC host John Schaefer’s “New Sounds Live” series, Requiem for Fossil Fuels finds sound artists Bruce Odland and Sam Auinger (together known as O+A) anticipating the inevitable end of our worldwide dependence on coal, gas, and oil. The piece mixes live vocal performances by four singers (mezzo-soprano Hai-Ting Chinn, soprano Martha Cluver, tenor Geoffrey Silver, and bass Mark Uhlemann) with what O+A refer to as an eight-channel “orchestra of cities”: field recordings of cars and jets and the like, some of which were originally captured at the World Financial Center in 2004. Be sure to take the subway here, ya’ll.
