Known as “Second Breath” in English, this mid-period Melville opens with a Bressonian prison break, then settles down to watch the doomed, near-epic struggle waged by toughest of the tough guys (granite-faced Lino Ventura) against both his treacherous underworld cohorts and an exceedingly cool police inspector.
