Shelly Silver Wants Pervy Assemblyman Vito Lopez To Call It A Career

In an apparent attempt to save a little face, Democratic Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver says he’s asked disgraced Assemblyman Vito Lopez to quit his job in the wake of the ongoing sex scandal that’s plaguing both pols.

Lopez, as you know, has a habit of allegedly sexually harassing young, female staffers by — amongst other things — asking that they not wear bras to work and shoving his hands up their skirts. Multiple women have complained about Lopez’s unwelcome advances — two of those complaints were settled with more than $130,000 in taxpayer money that Silver signed off on in an attempt to sweep the allegations against his former pal under the rug.

Silver, who currently is at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, now says he spoke with Lopez on Friday and urged the once-powerful Brooklyn Dem to call it a career.

“I asked him to resign as a member of the Assembly,” Silver told reporters last night at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte. “We have to maintain the respect and dignity for everyone who works in the Assembly. There has to be a professional environment.”

The speaker says Lopez did not seem to have any plans to give up his seat.

Lopez, as we’ve chronicled, is kind of a pervert. Several former female employees of the once-powerful pol have made claims that he sexually harassed them in one way or another.

Two woman who alleged sexual misconduct against Lopez were paid $130,000 in taxpayer money to essentially keep their mouths shut — which probably would have been kept quiet if not for two additional women making claims that Lopez sexually harassed them. Those women claim the harassment occurred just weeks after the state dished out the settlement cash to the initial alleged victims.

The allegations have landed both Lopez in Silver in the sights of feminist groups like the National Organization for Women and women’s rights attorney Gloria Allred, who is representing some of the alleged victims.

Additionally, Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes has called for a special prosecutor to investigate whether any of the allegations are criminal offenses.

Lopez stepped down from his position as the head of the Brooklyn Democratic Party, but says he will not leave his Assembly seat.
