South Carolina Electors Report Requests to Change Votes

by

WASHINGTON, NOVEMBER 15—Two South Carolina members of the electoral college claim they have received phone calls from an unidentified person asking them to change their votes from Republican George W. Bush to Democrat Al Gore, according the Columbia newspaper, The State.

Bush easily carried South Carolina, garnering 57 percent of the vote. The state has eight electoral votes.

Both electors said they assumed the requests came from the Gore campaign, but the paper reports this morning that the Democratic camp denies making any such calls.

The men said they wouldn’t switch. “I’d cut my arm off first before voting for Al Gore,” Cecil Windham, a retired farmer, told the paper.
