Arguably the slickest trick in the Wilder’s oeuvre, this Code dodging comedy about an ambitious clerk who allows his superiors to tryst in his pad is both supremely cynical and, in setting up a relationship between the Jack Lemon and Shirley Maclaine characters, poignantly romantic.
