Monday: blech. The city’s population is about to add 600,000 commuters coming from around the metropolitan area. To you, intrepid bridge-and-tunnel people: don’t speed. New York gives out the third highest number of driving citations of any state in the country. No need to add any more grief to the start of your work week, so we at Runnin’ Scared thought we’d do you a solid and compile a list of the top ten speed traps in the New York City metropolitan area.
In this very unscientific study, we went to speedtrap.org, a resource from the National Motorists Association, and found the stretches of road with cops lying in wait for speeders. We’ve included testimonials from some victims of these traps.

Number 10: Belt Parkway/Knapp Street, Brooklyn
Coming off the Belt Parkway at Knapp Street the speed limit goes to 30 MPH ramp speed. An unmarked police car with radar on sitting just to the right of the exit ramp. All day risk of a ticket. Speeding through here is dangerous due to parking lot entrance and stores.
Number 9: Korean War Memorial 440 Overpass, Staten Island

Number 8: Northbound Bruckner Expressway & Castle Hill Avenue, The Bronx
Marked & unmarked Hwy Patrol park either under Caste Hil overpass (very dark) or in striped area about 1/8th of a mile up. Catch you with either rear facing radar (overpass) or officer sits with door open & points radar gun at you. Usually Crown Victoria of Charger.
Number 7: Exit Tunnel on 1st Avenue by the United Nations, Manhattan
When entering tunnel bypass on 1st avenue and about 42nd street . Be cautious when exiting there is on occasion L E O standing with a laser gun.

Number 6: South Fulton Avenue at East 8th Street, Mount Vernon, NY
The Officer is parked on fulton at the corner of 8th ave waiting for cars to come down the hill so soon you stop at the light on 8th he tells you to pull over and he will try to get a few cars speeding at the same time which i think is illegal. how can he tell who is going at what speed?
Number 5: Westfield Avenue, Elizabeth, New Jersey
East Westfield Avenue Elizabeth, NJ a two lane street they have a parked stationary police vehicle with lights on. As cars approach the cars in the right lane are pulled over and ticketed and given a ticket and a brochure about New Jersey’s Move Over Law. I got caught and at least 30 other vehicles were caught in the five minutes I was waiting for my ticket. I returned going West 15 minutes later and they had packed up because they reached their quota. It must be a good money maker. The punishment for violating NJ’s Move Over Law is a fine up to $500 ($100 – $500) and two points on your driving record.
Number 4: Northern Boulevard by Citifield, Queens
The speed trap is on Northern Blvd by Citified Heading eastbound crossing over ramp onto main street. Police officer hides behind bushes/shrubs on right side. Ramp itself no speed limit signs posted but heading west back toward manhattan sign is posted as soon as you enter ramp.
Number 3: Clapboard Ridge Road at Lake Avenue, Greenwich, Connecticut
Not always but occasionally a cop will sit on a small cutout on the side of Lake ave where Clapboard Ridge rd cuts through lake ave. Runs constant KA band mostly pointing at the hill in back of him.

Number 2: Ocean Parkway between Avenue J and L, Brooklyn
The highway patrol stands in the middle of ocean parkway in an unmarked car in the morning hours usually when there is no traffic its easy to speed there and no way to see him.
Number 1: Ridgewood Road near Millburn border, Maplewood, New Jersey
Maplewood Police is there everyday, almost all times of day. Anyone going over the 25mph limit going towards the train tracks gets stopped.
