Looking to challenge yourself? Check out food trivia, a class on pupusa-making, or a film about what makes specialty coffee so special — other than your barista. Here are five events on our radar this week.
Foods from the Red Hook Ballfields, Bowery Culinary Center — Whole Foods, 95 East Houston Street, Tuesday, 6 p.m.
Traveling to the Red Hook ballfields for Central American grub isn’t always easy (though it’s worth the trek if you can do it), so consider learning how to make a few staples of the event yourself. In addition to a crash course in pupusa-making, students will create huaraches, ceviche, and mango flower on a stick. Tickets are $50.
Beer Film Festival, Anthology Film Archives, 32 Second Avenue, Tuesday, 7 p.m.
Put together by Jimmy Carbone of Jimmy’s No. 43, this festival encourages drinking out in the open in a theater. Local breweries like 508 Gastrobrewery and Rockaway Brewing will provide refreshments while guests watch films about the craft beer movement. Tickets are $15.
Pat Kiernan’s Trivia Food Fight, The Bell House, 149 7th Street, Brooklyn Tuesday, 7 p.m.
If you’ve got food on the brain, challenge yourself to a game of trivia hosted by NY1’s Pat Kiernan. Attendees will have the chance to go one on one with Pat to answer pop culture food questions; prizes include tastings and food outings, while snacks and beverages will be provided throughout the evening. Tickets are $26.
A Film About Coffee, Williamsburg Cinemas, 217 Grand Street, Brooklyn, Wednesday, 6:30 p.m.
People who are jubilant over java will want to check out a screening of this film focusing on specialty coffee, which is also offering a few cups of Joe for attendees in lieu of popcorn. The movie traces coffee from its origins at farms in Rwanda and Honduras all the way to hipster coffee shops in major metropolitan cities. Stick around for a Q and A with the director. Tickets are $15.
The Jolly Monk Grand Opening Party, The Jolly Monk, 901 Ninth Avenue, Friday, 6 p.m.
Get a jump on planning your next weekend and pencil this Belgian beer party into your calendar. The Jolly Monk will celebrate its grand opening with free samples, drink discounts, and complimentary appetizers. The kitchen will also be open for full service, offering specialties like mussels, frites, and waffles.
