Children of Bodom make black metal that knows how to party hard. Andrew W.K.’s The Wolf, when it comes out, won’t have half the rock power of their new Hatecrew Deathroll. It’s 10 tracks of lightning-fast, ultra-disciplined metal—but lots of bands (Immortal, Gorgoroth, Strapping Young Lad) have done that just fine lately. So Children of Bodom have busted out a secret weapon: better synths than any metal since Dio’s “Rainbow In The Dark.” Every song has a keyboard solo, barreling out of the speakers like Rick Wakeman composing soundtrack music for Atari 2600 game cartridges in 1982.
The fifth track, “Angels Don’t Kill,” slows things a little, but then “Triple Corpse Hammerblow” goes headfirst into the flames again. (The album also contains songs called “Bodom Beach Terror” and “Lil’ Bloodred Ridin’ Hood.”) The Bodom kids make black metal fun, without making it sappy or ironic—you’ll bounce off your apartment walls all night, but you’ll be smiling beneath your corpse paint.
