All Is Not Well in Jim Mamary’s Brooklyn Fiefdom

Jim Mamary may have built the Smith Street dining scene with his bare, manly hands, but now it looks like his foundation’s beginning to crack. The Real Deal is reporting that three of Mamary’s restaurants — Since 1963, Bueno, and Fly Fish — closed last week, and others may follow.

Since he opened his first restaurant, Restaurant 101, in Bay Ridge 20 years ago, Mamary’s played a part in creating some 23 Brooklyn restaurants, including Patois, the French restaurant that helped make Smith Street a dining destination after it opened in 1997.

Although Mamary tells TRD that he’s packing up his family and moving from Ditmas Park to New Jersey, he’s not quite done with New York: he’s still got a stake in five restaurants, and in addition to expanding his Newkirk Avenue bistro, Pomme de Terre, into a neighboring storefront, he’s thinking of taking on new projects in Greenpoint and Crown Heights.
