The end of the week has brought the end of two downtown restaurants: Both Table 8 and Irving Mill are giving up the ghost.
The Post reports that Govind Armstrong, Table 8’s chef and partner, “made the decision to separate myself and the Table 8 name” from the Cooper Square Hotel, where the restaurant opened a mere seven months ago. Armstrong’s restaurant had been dogged by middling reviews, not to mention befouled undergarments, as well as criminal allegations against Armstrong’s business partner. Scarpetta’s Scott Conant is rumored to be taking over the space; no word yet on when Table 8 will close its doors for good.
A few blocks north, Irving Mill is also calling it a day: Grub Street has learned that it will close in early February and be colonized by the sixth location of the barbecue chain Brother Jimmy’s. Like Table 8, Irving Mill also had its share of trouble: John Schaefer, the chef who helped open the restaurant in 2007, sued its owners, and his successor, Ryan Skeen, departed for Allen & Delancey.
Brother Jimmy’s is planning to install 200 seats and 45 flat-screen TVs in the 7,500-square-foot space, which is another kind of trouble altogether.
